This is a small kifu sized raw Satsuki azalea, var. Aozora, that was worked on in the spring of 2011 for a long time friend and client in Japan. The initial work and styling is mainly focused on getting the basic structure of the tree set and creating a root structure that will take the tree forward into becoming a bonsai.
Removing the field soil is a once only job and this kind of severe work can and should only be attempted when the tree has just been dug from the ground. It will soon be ready for exhibition.
